9:00 am
hello, it's monday, it's 9 o'clock, i'm victoria derbyshire, welcome to the programme. our top story today — a gunman opens fire at a music concert in las vegas. reports of at least two dead and multiple casualties. we saw first officers running into the lift bay. they were going up. they were coming down. they were going this way, that way. we were told to get out. one shooter is up there, we were told by police and one is roaming around and we were told to come here and we think we're safe here because there is so many police. in the last few minutes police have given this update. officers as well as our partners have responded to reports of an active shooter situation at the mandalay bay. i can tell you at this time we have a suspect down. we'll keep you right across this breaking story. we will talk to people who were live at the concert.
9:01 am
also on the programme — monarch airlines is no more. it's gone into administration — meaning all flights and holidays are cancelled. they gave us a leaflet to say our flights with monarch had been cancelled. we were panicking, everybody is after flights here there, and everywhere, it has cost another £666 to get to where i want to go today when i have already paid £1500. if you've booked a flight or a holiday with monarch do get in touch. and — the controversial universal credit rollout will continue — despite calls from within the conservative party for the system to be delayed. i have got no money at all. nothing at all. not even fourpence to my name. hello. let's start with the breaking news from las vegas —
9:02 am
two people have died and 2a have been injured after a gunman opened fire on people at an open air country music festival outside the mandalay bay casino close to the sunset strip. footage taken on mobile phones shows people crouching down or running for cover and you can also clearly hear the sound of several bursts of persistent, repetitive, prolonged gunfire. a local hospital says 14 people are critically injured. flights have been temporarily halted from mccarran international airport. many in the nearby area have now been evacuated. witnesses have described the chaos. we saw first officers about eight running into the lift bay. they were going up. they were coming down. they were going this way, that way, we we re they were going this way, that way, we were told to get out. we were told to get in. the shooters, one shooter is up there shooting out and one is roaming around and we have been told to come here and we think
9:03 am
we're safe here because there is so many place. did you see the shooters? no. did you hear it? a lot of people heard gunshots, but they we re of people heard gunshots, but they were like machine gunfire. police have urged people to stay away from the area and gave this update. officers as well as our partners with multiple agencies have responded to reports of an active shooter situation at the mandalay bay. i can tell you at this time we do have a suspect down. our officers can confirm that for you. but i understand the people of las vegas wa nt to understand the people of las vegas want to help. i see a lot of people out here that are coming down wanting to help, please steer clear of the area. we have all the resources from las vegas metropolitan police department. please stay away from the area. we have had reports of people coming down trying to help. we have got that. so we're good right now. but we have numerous victims right now. ididn't
9:04 am
we have numerous victims right now. i didn't have a numberfor you on that, but please keep their families and them in your thoughts as we work our way through this problem. let's hear from another eyewitness right now. we just heard machine guns and one of the security guards asked us to stop. we thought it was on the other side. we just thought it was maybe play machine guns, but it was maybe play machine guns, but it definitely wasn't. it sounded at least 30 rounds or more and then there was... i heard single gunshots too. could you see the gunshots? no, we could hear them. they were right by mandalay bay headed towards this way. our correspondent gave this update. well, they're saying that there are two people confirmed dead. there are multiple injuries, wounds in the hospital and the police havejust tweeted in the last 30 seconds that
9:05 am
they believe that the one shooter is down and that there are no more shooters. whether or not that is confirmed we don't know. there has been talk over the last hour that there were multiple shooters, but these shootings are too common in these shootings are too common in the united states and quite often in the united states and quite often in the beginning when the chaos is happening, you see scenes of people screaming on social media and just horrendous chaos, often there are reports of multiple shooters, but let's hope the police are right and that they believe that the one active shooter they have is down, but you have seen, you know, you have heard reports if you listen to the police scanner which it is easy to do here, you can hear reports of shootings at multiple hotels around the vegas strip, but the police say no, that's not accurate. we're here, there is no shooter here. clearly a developing situation in vegas. a lot of confusion. we know that two people are dead so far. 2a people, according to one local hospital, are critically injured. we are going to keep you up—to—dated
9:06 am
with events as they develop throughout the morning. we will talk live to eyewitnesses in a moment. annita is in the bbc newsroom with a summary of the rest of the day's news. monarch airlines has been put into administration overnight, leaving more than a hundred thousand customers overseas, and all of its future bookings cancelled. monarch is the uk's fifth biggest airline and the largest ever to collapse. customers due to fly from the uk have been told not to go to the airport. the tour operator had been in last—ditch talks with the civil aviation authority about renewing its licence to sell package holidays, but failed to reach a deal. this morning transport secretary chris grayling spoke about the operation to bring holiday—makers home. i know this is really tough for people who are hoping to travel, who were hoping to travel. my heart goes out to them today. we've talked to other airlines, to other tour operators, and they've already started trying to rebook and organise people's trips.
9:07 am
they will do their best to do so and i very much hope people will be able to get away before too long. let's go tojon donnison. jon, what more can you tell us about what is going to be happening to passengers who abroad and the future for monarch‘s who abroad and the future for mona rch‘s employees? who abroad and the future for monarch's employees? well, let's start with the workers. this is the monarch headquarters here. they employ around about 2100 people, many of them here in luton and within the last half an hour or so they have been turning up for work. frankly, they are going to be getting bad news, the administrators, kpmg are inside the building. they are wanting to speak to individuals face—to—face, but we understand that the majority of those 2100 people are going to be losing theirjobs. let's get on to the passengers. 110,000 monarch passengers currently overseas are now in the process of being
9:08 am
repatriated back to the united kingdom. that is an operation being led by the civil aviation authority. they've chartered 30 planes in from other airlines to do that. a massive operation that's going to take several weeks and on top of that, you've got 300,000 future bookings which involve some 700,000 individual tickets and basically those people are being told don't go to the airport. you're not flying with monarch and people, i think, are going to struggle to get their money back. they're not going to get it back from the airline. you might get it back from your debit card or credit card company or if you have taken out travel insurance. jon, thank you very much. the government of catalonia says 90% of those who voted in yesterday's banned referendum backed breaking away from spain. the spanish government insists the poll was illegal. catalan officials say more than 800 people were injured, as riot police stormed polling stations, and fired rubber bullets to try and stop people voting. the government in madrid will meet
9:09 am
with other political parties today to discuss a response to the situation. the government's universal credit system is leaving many claimants in rent arrears, according to the largest housing associations in the areas where the new system was first introduced. as many as 84% of their tenants who are on universal credit owe rent on their homes, with an average debt of £655. the department for work and pensions says the vast majority of claimants are paid in full and on time. £400 million for new road and rail projects in the north of england will be unveiled by the chancellor later to connect towns and cities to the high—speed 2 rail route. labour described it as a "drop in the ocean." philip hammond is also expected to give a strong defence of tory economics after they were attacked byjeremy corbyn last week. a group representing nhs leaders in england, wales and northern ireland says that more than half of members have expressed extreme
9:10 am
concern about their ability to cope this winter. the nhs confederation says there is a limit as to how much hospitals and community services can achieve during winter because of problems recruiting staff, pressures on funding, and some patients being left without the care they need. that's a summary of the latest bbc news — more at 9:30am. let's continue talking about the breaking news from the city of las vegas. two people have been killed and 20 injured after a gunman opened fire at a country music festival. police say one suspect is dead or injured. as you can see this is video shows hundreds of people either crouching down or trying it get out of the area, lots and lots of people who were there took footage on their mobile phone. what you can't hear and that's deliberate on our part, is what appears to be
9:11 am
the sound of automatic gunfire. persistent and prolonged automatic gunfire which you can hear in some of the clips taken by people who we re of the clips taken by people who were there. let's talk to our correspondent who is in los angeles. when did this begin? how many hours ago? talk us through the events of the night. it has been almost three hours, about two—and—a—half hours and it started at this concert, people were filming as you say as people were filming as you say as people do at concerts and so much was captured on video. some people thought that it was a band playing on stage. some people thought the sound was fireworks. it goes on for a long time before the music stops and then people really start panicking and as you saw, they are lying on the ground. people are sheltering, hiding and then people start running towards the end, trying to get out of there, but they
9:12 am
don't know where the gunfire is coming from and it's just really disturbing, difficult scenes to watch. there is at least two people reported dead. there are multiple wounded and the shooter, the police have said they believe that the shooter is down. whether or not that means dead or restrained, it usually means dead or restrained, it usually means dead or restrained, it usually means dead if a police officer says that. they believe there was only one shooter. so hopefully this is overfor one shooter. so hopefully this is over for now. right, from that footage, i mean, i have looked at some of the distressing clips, this automatic gunfire does go on for sometime before it seems as you say, people realise what it was. and then there is this silence as what has just happened presumably is being absorbed by people who were there? yeah, when the music stops. it's really disturbing. it's, you know, it's vegas. it is america's playground. some people call it si city. it is the kind of place people party on a sunday night. there were thousands and thousands of people at
9:13 am
that festival. there were thousands of people on the strip nearby and fireworks isn't uncommon. u nfortu nately, fireworks isn't uncommon. unfortunately, mass shootings aren't that uncommon either. . that prolonged gunfire is unusual. i haven't actually timed, but i would say it went for 30 seconds, maybe a0 seconds and i think people were in shock trying to figure out what was going on then and then they panic and everyone starts ducking. the police say that to use their words, "one shooter is down." it's not clear whether that means a gunman is dead or injured, but there have been rumours that there were other gunmen at other parts of the area. but that's not true, is that right? well, the police don't believe it is true and they don't usually say, they don't believe it's true unless it's true. often in the initial chaos, there are reports of shootings all over the place. reports of multiple shooters, that's quite typical because i'm not sure
9:14 am
why, but it spreads on social media and people panic, people are calling the police. you can listen to scanner traffic here in the us and if you were listening you could hear reports of shootings at other hotels and then a police officer would say, that's not accurate, i'm here, that's not accurate, i'm here, that's not accurate, i'm here, that's not happening. so, they know what's going on. they have communication around the place and i think if they are coming out and saying they believe there is only one shooter and that shooter is down then it's most likely accurate. some of our audience will have visited this area, of course, on holiday. for those who haven't, tell us about, this is the area where the casinos are and the big hotels and so on? mandalay bay is right this the heart of it and the concert was happening just outside the hotel across the street on this big open area. there are hotels over the place, big, gleaming, shining casinos. if you haven't been there, you have probably seen images of las vegas on television. it will be
9:15 am
packed with people from over the world. i heard british people who we re world. i heard british people who were there interviewed on tv, some on the bbc, i believe i heard on world tv, people from all over the world go there, all over the united states, it is a very international place, las vegas. people from around the world want to go there and they tend to stay out late even on a sunday night. the streets were crowded. thank you. rogan morris reporting live. let's talk now to some people who we re were at the concert, and working at the concert. in a minute we will speak to seth bales. seth bayles who was attending the route 91 festival and was in the middle of the audience when the shooting started. thank you for talking to our british audience. tell us what happened from your point of view. i have been working the last three days. the
9:16 am
route 91 music festival. they letters off a little bit early today so we could see the last performance. i had called my girlfriend to come and meet me there so she could get in as well and we could both watch the last performer. we made our way into the middle of the crowd, pretty close to the stage. on about the third song, we could hear a noise that sounded like fireworks. and everybodyjust kind of looked around but they thought it was fireworks. the performer kept going. and then it went off again... ten seconds later, it went off again. you see the performers run off the stage full stop the whole stage goes black. people are saying, get down, get down. that is when we knew it was like a shooter. we are all on the ground. we can't see
9:17 am
anything. it was dark. all you hear is gunshots going. it keeps going. somebody says, he is reloading, ran. everyone starts to run. you see people getting trampled. people are bloody everywhere. i saw a girl, her whole face was bloody, her chest was bloody full of people burning their hands on grills. there were kids everywhere. it was crazy. then we made it out and we ran next door. we get inside and we're trying to figure out where to go and we hear somebody yell, the shooter is in here. then everybody starts running out of there. then we ran across to the mgm and everybody is trying to figure out what to do. there are
9:18 am
police everywhere, paramedics everywhere at this point. the strip, we don't want to be on the strip itself to be kind of get on the road, next to it. like an off—road. we tried to get far of the strip. we get to a smaller hotel and the workers are telling people to come in cycles that they don't want people outside because it is not safe. —— come inside because they don't want. you can see people laying on the floor, bloody full you wa nt to laying on the floor, bloody full you want to stop to help them. you don't know where the shooter is you don't know where the shooter is you don't know where the shooter is you don't know where to go he is at. even when you are effectively running for your life, you can still hear gunshots, can you? yes. it was a machine gun which kept going off. it would go off and then it would be like they
9:19 am
are reloading and then start to go again. or you could do was really run. “ again. or you could do was really run. -- all again. or you could do was really run. —— all you could do. again. or you could do was really run. -- all you could do. it was definitely an automatic weapon will --. how many people were in the hotel where you were pulled into? people were crying. they were bleeding. the workers were cleaning up bleeding. the workers were cleaning up the floor, trying to keep eve ryo ne up the floor, trying to keep everyone calm. people panicking, dropping glasses. they were shattering. they were just trying to get everybody off the street and keep everybody calm. what do you think about what has happened?m keep everybody calm. what do you think about what has happened? it is devastating. i can't see how some can do this. it is all ages at this
9:20 am
music festival. there are kids, elderly people. we have obviously lost the connection to logan and liberty. i do apologise for that. they have articulately described what has happened in the last few hours at the route 91 music festival. you heard them say it sounded like fireworks. the thousands of people who are there thought it was fireworks. the sound kept going and the music carried on. whoever was on stage carried on performing. suddenly the stage goes black and there is absolute silence and people start to get down and realise what is going on. one or to people shout, he is reloading, run! that is when the crowd starts to get
9:21 am
out of there. as logan and liberty described, they could see people everywhere, bloodied, elderly, children. they ran from the area. they tried to get into one hotel, they did get into one hotel at which some point, somebody said, the shooter is in here. every body at that hotel then ran out. the way they described it when it was com plete they described it when it was complete panic and chaos and confusion, as you would imagine. they found another hotel where the staff pulled them inside, pulled as many people inside and said, you need to get off the street, effectively. it appears from what logan and liberty were saying, it appeared to be some kind of sanctuary that everyone was crying, eve ryo ne sanctuary that everyone was crying, everyone was panicking, everybody was wondering what on had just happened to them. —— what on earth
9:22 am
had just happened to them. this is footage taken on mobile phones by people who were there. the sound of the automatic gunfire, which was prolonged and persistent and repetitive went of force dash went on for some time, logan was telling us about is why people thought it was fireworks, firecrackers. our correspondent said that is not unusual in this part of vegas. it is a party city, even on a sunday night. i'm going to talk to jason now, who was inside the mandalay bay hotel. tell our british audience where the hotel is in relation to the festival and the shooting? the hotel is located at the end of the strip in las vegas. just less than a
9:23 am
block diagonally away from the hotel is kind of like a fairground, an open field area. there is a large stage at one end of it. towards the mandalay bay side of the street. and thenit mandalay bay side of the street. and then it opens up to a large field. there are some tents, probably for concessions and things. then, back behind that, towards the purple building, there is also a small fairground with carnival rides and things like that. so, you are showing us the view from your hotel room in the mandalay bay. is that correct? that is correct. i am at the front of the hotel. directly below me is the entrance for taxis and check—in. below me is the entrance for taxis and check-in. were you at the concert were you in the hotel when the shooting began?”
9:24 am
concert were you in the hotel when the shooting began? i was actually in my room just watching tv and talking on the phone. when it started, i obviously didn't realise what was going on. i thought it was a motorcycle or a group of motorcycles out front whether caps coming, just revving their engines. it was a long ten seconds, it seemed like. once that stopped, i got up to see if there were fireworks or something. then it happened again. i am looking around and now i know fireworks, no motorcycles. i did look at the concert because the music had stopped. when i looked at the concert, they have in the open area, they had their spotlights and just regular lights for the crowd, pointing at the crowd. the difference from when i looked at it
9:25 am
then and when i did earlier is that it seems like people were moving around. when i looked at it earlier, when i came into my room after sunset, it was shoulder to shoulder. it was packed. then i noticed people we re it was packed. then i noticed people were moving around and something definitely was going on. sorry to pause you for a moment, if you don't mind. thank you for that. i'm going to bring in seth bales. you are in the middle of the audience when the shooting began, is that correct? yes, we were about 75, 100 seats away from the performance. things started and as i told another source, i thought it was tall rockets going off. it sounded like p°ppin9 rockets going off. it sounded like popping back is what i remembered when i was younger. clearly that was not the case. how long did it take
9:26 am
you to realise what actually was? probably 30 to a5 seconds. there we re probably 30 to a5 seconds. there were several pops. i'm guessing maybe five or six different things. i thought it was someone shooting bottle rockets. that was amplified. i was telling everyone not to worry, it was just bottle rockets. everyone was dining down. it took me a second and we down. —— going down. we started to realise belatedly this was not a joke anymore and then we sprinted out away from where we heard everything. you said you saw someone on stage going down. do you mean hurt? not on stage, in front of the stage. they just mean hurt? not on stage, in front of the stage. theyjust got hit and
9:27 am
dropped. not on the stage, not a performer. just in the audience. somebody got hit. that is when we kind of realise this was not a joke anymore and we took off away from where we thought the shooting was from. we sprinted towards the east because it sounded as if the shots we re because it sounded as if the shots were coming from the left. along with thousands of other people? everybody started bolting out. people were running and some were laying on the ground. some people we re laying on the ground. some people were laying on the ground. as we ran out towards the east ex six of the concert, people all over the place work on the ground. you could not tell who was hit and he was ducking for cover. there was blood all over the place. —— who was ducking. we probably should have stayed and helped out more than we did but we had a slight or flight response and
9:28 am
took off towards the east exit. —— fright or flight. we were at the tropicana hotel. everybody came over. they searched everybody. now we're waiting to see what is going on. presumably, your hotel and all the others on the strip are in lockdown, are they? yes, nothing is going on anywhere. everything is in lockdown. everything is shut off. the bars are closed. everything is shut off and in lockdown. various police and security everywhere and they are searching everyone, which is what should be done. everything is what should be done. everything is locked off. we're waiting to see what the next steps are. it was a surreal experience, to say the least. you sound very calm, if you don't mind me saying. least. you sound very calm, if you
9:29 am
don't mind me sayinglj least. you sound very calm, if you don't mind me saying. i mean, there is nothing else to do at this point. we are in a giant ballroom holding area with thousands of people, it looks right. you kind of have to deal with it. nobody i knew personally got hit, so nothing else to do at this point. just stay calm and hopefully everything is ok. we gotan and hopefully everything is ok. we got an alert on the phone that the last shooter was taken down. but who knows how accurate and whatever it is. nothing else we can do at this point. we are really grateful for your time. thank you for talking to our british audience. seth bales was in the middle of the audience. let's bring you police press conference held by las vegas police. this tragic event has taken place and is currently taking place at mandalay bay on las vegas boulevard south. we

9:41 am
the hotel where the gunman began shooting from in fact the 32nd floor. jason, which floor are you on? i'm on the 12th floor. 0k. on? i'm on the 12th floor. ok. so when you heard that, the shooter was above you ? ok. so when you heard that, the shooter was above you? yes. it sounded really close to me. it had to have been somewhere above me, based on that angle that my room faces the concert. did you have any idea then that the gunman was based in the hotel where you are? no, idea then that the gunman was based in the hotelwhere you are? no, not really. at one point i was afraid that because i heard some glass, i heard glass breaking. so i thought you know shots may have been coming towards the hotel. so i laid down
9:42 am
behind both the beds that are here in the room away from the window. i stayed there for a good ten or 15 minutes. i'm going to introduce our audience to nathan judder who minutes. i'm going to introduce our audience to nathanjudder who is a british journalist who is on holiday in las vegas. thank you very much for talking to us. i don't know if you managed to hear the police officer giving us the latest news that sadly more than 20 people have been killed, more than 100 people have been injured. tell us what you heard. tell us what you saw. yes, it'sjust been heard. tell us what you saw. yes, it's just been a heard. tell us what you saw. yes, it'sjust been a crazy heard. tell us what you saw. yes, it's just been a crazy few hours really. at 10.15 our time, myself and my wife we were just finished dinnerand a show and my wife we were just finished dinner and a show at the mgm and we we re dinner and a show at the mgm and we were about to walk across to the side where the mandalay bay was to
9:43 am
continue the evening and we were just going out of the exit doors when maybe ten or 15 people ran straight past us. we didn't really think too much about it and then a few seconds later it was hundreds just running in and obviously we didn't really fully understand exactly what was going on at that time, but we turned around and went straight back into the casino and hundreds of people running, crying, screaming, dropping bags, dropping shoes, dropping everything they could and a lot of people were obvious rid caught up in it. a lot of people in the casino didn't know what was going on, where it had occurred, whether inside the casino or outside. just really, really scary for people who don't know. las vegas casinos are huge complexes so from one end to the other and running to the next exit takes two or three minutes, but running to the next exit takes two orthree minutes, but by running to the next exit takes two or three minutes, but by the time they got to the end of the casino, people were coming in from that exit as well. we funneled in and went
9:44 am
deep into the casino and people were hiding in bathrooms and restaurants, luckily we managed to get out and go back to our hotel, but just scary really. people were just devastated. there is a few people being treated in and around our hotel as most of the hotels are on the strip now, are on complete lockdown, butjust the hotels are on the strip now, are on complete lockdown, but just a horrible, horrible feeling and thoughts and prayers to everyone who has been affected tonight. absolutely. the police said it is a devastating time and they are doing the best they can to look after the survivors and advising people to stay where they are. but i mean you can't, you wouldn't to leave anyway, would you, nathan, that's the bottom line? no, absolutely not. we met a lady, a lovely lady who was panicked. she was with her daughter and she separated and got a taxi. she has got a taxi and she is at the airport. the airport is locked down as well. they are transporting
9:45 am
people. there is no flights coming in and out of vegas at the moment so they have been moved on and we her in our hotel looking after her really and she is very shaken and you know, it's a horrible time for everybody and loved ones and family. it'sjust so sad. it really is. just to be caught up in it, you know, one of the unfortunate ones, just really seeing the death toll keeps rising and we are glued to the tv screens in our rooms at the moment, but it isa in our rooms at the moment, but it is a horrible time and it'sjust really sad. thank you very much, nathan. nathan judder. let's talk to our reporter who is in last angeles. —— los angeles. 20 people dead and over 100 injured. devastating. it is extraordinary. they said at least 20. that number
9:46 am
could rise. it is extraordinary. a few minutes ago we were saying two people killed. the scale of this is really just people killed. the scale of this is reallyjust staggering. they people killed. the scale of this is really just staggering. they said the suspect is dead. we don't know anything about him. they are looking for another suspect, or accomplice, a woman travelling with him. they said the shooting came from an upper floor at the hotel, at the mandalay bay. he was shooting down into this concert. people were enjoying themselves. nevada has open carry laws, permissive gun laws. it is legal to carry these assault weapons in nevada. he could have checked into a hotel and it would not have been an issue. it isjust into a hotel and it would not have been an issue. it is just horrific, the whole idea. even hotels at that height. the windows quite often don't even opened. i was wondering if there a balcony or whatever. i
9:47 am
have not seen the images. the scale is extraordinary. now the hunt is on for what the police described as the gunman's companion. a woman called marilou danley. they're looking for a few different vehicles and she is there and they want to speak to her. they didn't make it clear if she was an actual suspect or if they want to talk to her to get some more information but they are looking for her. for the moment, thank you very much. we're going to talk to quinn, who is fairon much. we're going to talk to quinn, who is fair on holiday and he was at the concert. thank you for talking to us. this is a really traumatic time for you. tell us where you are when you first heard the shooting. high. thanks for having me on. i was sitting towards the back of the main
9:48 am
grounds for the country festival. i was sitting there with my girlfriend. there were —— i was probably a00, 500 yards away from the stage. it was the last act of the stage. it was the last act of the weekend. 20 to 25 minutes into the weekend. 20 to 25 minutes into the performance. we started hearing, it sounded almost like firecrackers. everybody stopped they were doing, looked at it and kind of went, ok. we acted the same way we did, it is probably nothing. it is probably firecrackers. and then i would say five, six seconds later it happened again. at that point i saw the performer actually stop playing. i think he was startled by it as well. son behind me said that is gunfire, and when he gets down. —— someone
9:49 am
behind me. everyonejust hit the deck, trying to get cover. i saw people running from the stage. at this point i'm here with my dell friend —— my girlfriend. isaw this point i'm here with my dell friend —— my girlfriend. i saw her going down rather quickly. i thought she might have been hit possibly. i was absolutely terrified. i got on top of her and shoved her as best i could while walking around trying to catch my bearings and seeing what was going on. there were short bursts. i pretty much understood it was not fireworks. it happened to be some kind of automatic weapons fire. i guess in between the bursts i told her i was ok but she was ok. we need
9:50 am
to try to get away from whatever is going on. our hotel is situated pretty close to where the festival is. we started to run back towards there. i think somebody might have knocked down a fence or something like that. there was a huge group of us stampeding out of the back of the festival of las vegas boulevard. it was mayhem. every ten, 15 seconds would hear another burst. it sounded like it was coming from everywhere. your instinct is telling you to try to find a place to hide but you don't want to be sitting there. we kept running, just running towards the hotel. fortunately we were able to get back. we were in our room, where we have been for the last two and a half hours. we are obviously shaken up. it is something you never
9:51 am
think will happen to you but it does and it really makes you think. yes. absolutely it does. you managed to get out but it could have been you. it could have been your girlfriend, couldn't it? exactly. right nowl was thinking about her, loosely, at first she was my main concern. in a weird way we are one of the lucky ones. in the back of my mind, that is what i am realising, that a lot of people aren't going to be as fortu nate. of people aren't going to be as fortunate. there are a lot of people here tonight you aren't going to build to go home. a lot of people have lost loved ones and that. that is what i'm thinking about right now. have you managed to speak to family and banking and friends of monkeys and told them you are ok?” have. —— in vancouver and friends in
9:52 am
vancouver. i spoke to my mum and told her what was going on. my brother was with her. he was on the police scanner, doing the updates on what he was hearing. i did talk to them and it was good to speak to them, for sure. thank you for speaking to us. quinn was there watching the last act of the weekend at the route 91 festival with his girlfriend when they heard what they thought were firecrackers or fireworks. then it became clear after a period of time, only seconds on paper, but it was a long time when you actually... if you have heard the clips and seen the footage on social media, a long time there was this persistent, prolonged, automatic gunfire. if you are just tuning in to us on bbc news, the

give you a little bit more idea of where everything is located. ok. so, you concede to the right of the screen where thousands of people we re screen where thousands of people were for the route 91 music festival, an open—air concert going on all weekend. it was the last act of the weekend when the gunmen from the mandalay bay hotel, which can see at the bottom of your screen, at the forefront of your screen, was a p pa re ntly the forefront of your screen, was apparently shooting from on the 32nd floor. we have spoken to jason toland who is resident on the 12th floor. he told a senior had to be someone close to him but had not realised it was someone on several floors above in who were shooting towards the crowds at the music festival. —— he told us he knew it had to be someone. over 20 people are dead and over 100 people are

injured. they are being treated in local hospitals. some of them are critically injured. liberty and logan were at the festival. logan had been working and was enjoying the music. they are still with us this morning. it is a difficult time for you, i appreciate that. i'm assuming you have managed to talk to friends and relatives, to let them know you are ok. is that right?” called my dad as we were actually running away. we were a couple of blocks away from the festival when i called my dad and let him know. he was telling me to keep running away from where the festival was. then i called my mum. then we had a few other people, i was working with the us army group. one of the people i was working with actually textured
9:57 am
me, probably about 20 minutes ago and asked if i were safe and everything. he said that they went backin everything. he said that they went back in with two other of the army people they were working with and they actually saved like four people and saw a bunch of people dive right in front of them, like we saw as we we re in front of them, like we saw as we were running out of the music festival. goodness me. how do you reflect on what you have experienced over the last few hours? we got pretty far off the strip to like the smaller hotel and my cousin, who was actually at mandalay bay, he called me right after it happened. he knew i was at the festival. he said that he heard gunshots and he was freaking out. he called me and said he had got to his car and i let him
9:58 am
know where i was. it took him a while to get to us because they closed down a lot of streets. they had to go all the way around to get to where we were. he finally got to us, where we were waiting at the hotel. there were a bunch of other people inside the hotel. the staff we re people inside the hotel. the staff were trying to get everyone inside. people were freaking out, crying, bleeding everywhere. he finally got to us and took us home. thank you so much for talking to us. logan and liberty, we are very grateful for your time. thank you for talking to our british audience. and jason tone and from the mandalay bay hotel as well. thank you for your time as well. thank you for your time as well. we appreciate it. the latest news and sport in a moment. first, the weather. a blustery day across the weather. a blustery day across the uk. outbreaks of rain along with

10:11 am
wearing the outfits you would for this kind of concert, the country and western concert. i knew straightaway where they had come from. i looked at my partner. we had worried faces and americans around us were looking pretty worried too. soiit us were looking pretty worried too. so i it then took over from then. what did you do? then in the background i could hear it sounded very much like to me an automatic weapon being fired. and so with that, the crowd then came surging towards us. i grabbed my partner and we ran and ran towards off the strip. i diverted ourselves off the strip, out of the way into the alleyways and back alleyways behind the strip towards another small hotel and we sort of cowered down
10:12 am
there for ten minutes. what were people saying? first of all the people saying? first of all the people who had been to the concert, they were screaming and shouting what had gone on and the local security people of the other hotel that we had cowered down by, they explained there had been a lockdown and with that, we could hear all the police cars screaming up to the scene. we could hear blapbless going to the scene, and then police helicopters were starting to hover over the area as well and with that other people were commenting as news started fillering through on various media on their phones, etcetera.” wa nt to media on their phones, etcetera.” want to bring in a lady whose daughter was at the concert with her older daughterjessica who is safe, but samantha is missing, is that right? yes. tell us what you know.

looking for a couple of vehicles as well. the police sheriff said they do not have exact numbers but they know in excess of 100 people have been injured and in excess of 20 people killed. that includes potentially, he believed, two off—duty police officers who were at the festival. let's talk to our reporter, reagan morris, who is in los angeles. the eyewitness accounts are los angeles. the eyewitness accounts a re really, really los angeles. the eyewitness accounts are really, really devastating as more information comes in, notjust from the police but from those who are at the festival. for those just tuning in here in britain, tell us when it began. it started a few hours ago, at 1030 local is when the shooting happened. the shooter was ina high shooting happened. the shooter was in a high story, a 32nd story i believe, the mandalay bay hotel and
10:23 am
casino. the concertgoers who were down below in the venue. we heard gunfire but a lot of witnesses said they initially thought it was fireworks. fireworks would not be that unusual. you hear the sound and the music is still playing. the singer put out a statement a few moments ago on his instagram account saying he is safe and ok but he is heartbroken, expressing his grief and rules this happened at one of his concerts. it was a big, weekend long country music festival. there we re long country music festival. there were thousands of people there. beyond the concert, on the strip, people from around the world, across the united states to vegas. it is a place people come for fun and vacation. just the scale of it is extraordinary. we know one of the victims, the one person who was shot
10:24 am
was from bakersfield, california, an off—duty policeman. there were eyewitness accounts, one man said he saw his friend shot three times, then he saw another person he did not know shot next to him he was trying to help his friend. the person he did not know died in his arms. there are extraordinary stories of people rushing the wounded to hospitals, trying to get them in. the scale of it is extraordinary. the police sheriff was not asked specifically if he believed this to be terrorism that it would be way too early to be able to know that anyway, wouldn't it? well, who knows? they are not saying much about this man, the shooter. the shooter is a man. they have said that. they have said... a lot of people in the us, is it terrorism? a
10:25 am
lot of people think any mass shooting is terrorism and you should call it that. a lot of people do not. it is a political debate in itself he is dead, the suspect is dead. we won't hear straight from him unless he has left some kind of notable reasoning behind. the police are the king for a female companion of his. marilou danley is her name was that they have described her as a companion. they have not said if she is considered an accomplice or they want more information from her first debate have asked the public for help in finding her. thank you. reagan morris reporting live from los angeles. we will honestly keep you updated through the morning on events in las vegas, where we now no more than 20 people were killed by a lone gunmen shooting from the mandalay bay hotel
10:26 am
and casino opposite. you can see behind the police cars, that is the hotel he was on the 32nd floor, say the police. he is dead. so are more than 20 people that he killed in the mass shooting. more than 100 people are injured. we will return to las vegas in a moment. first we are going to talk about monica airlines. monarch airlines has ceased trading and all of its future bookings have been cancelled. about 110,000 customers are currently overseas and the government has asked the civil aviation authority to charter more than 30 aircraft to bring them back to the uk. monarch is the uk's fifth biggest airline and the country's largest ever to go into administration. the transport secretary, speaking from the conservative party conference in manchester, said every effort was being made to help passengers and staff working for the airline. this is a hugely difficult day for
10:27 am
passengers and staff. we have done our best to help repatriate people who are overseas in the mediterranean. be happy working with other tour operators and airlines are the last 24 hours to try to make sure there is the earliest possible opportunity for people here to read book holidays. i have spoken to other airline bosses who say they are going to hire the star. i hope those people will find alternative employment soon. —— the staff. we will talk to phoebe smith who is the editor of wanderlust magazine, and i'm joined byjoe alvarez who was booked to fly on a monarch flight in three weeks time. i was booked on a flight to go to a family wedding. we found out this morning and has been cancelled, the
10:28 am
flight morning and has been cancelled, the flight we were going to go on this morning. alternatives are ridiculously expensive. u nfortu nately ridiculously expensive. unfortunately looks like now i'm not going to to go to the wedding. the flights were £80 return in the first place, which i thought was reasonable. did you pay for them on credit card? hopefully, the advice is that you should get your money back at least, which is something put up not exactly a consolation for missing a family wedding, i understand. alternative flights costing how much? the cheapest i've found were 210 and that is directed to gibraltar. if he wanted to go to a different airport, we are looking at the 250, 300 mark. at a different airport you have to arrange transport and other things. if we don't go, we have also booked a hotel and that is extra cost. how do you react? more disappointed and upset. a lot of people get angry.
10:29 am
obviously missing a wedding, it only happens once. i am so disappointed. we were taking my grandma because she is less mobile now and we were taking her. just disappointed and upset for her. phoebe smith, hello. how are you? i'm all right. how are you? iam how are you? i'm all right. how are you? i am very well. why has monarch gone into administration? they got caught out when the no—frills airlines came along. what hit them ha rd airlines came along. what hit them hard was in 2051 of their main routes was to sharm el—sheikh in egypt. routes was to sharm el—sheikh in egypt -- routes was to sharm el—sheikh in egypt. —— 2015. the airport was deemed unsafe and flights had to be cancelled. another key market was in tunisia. in the same year there was
10:30 am
a terrorist attack on a cut down another major route. that does that spain and the mediterranean market. despite a crowded marketplace in their rates have always been higher. they have played on the fact they do do good customer services and they do good customer services and they do offer meals whereas competitors do offer meals whereas competitors do not. it has become common place where people will vote with their feet. they seem to pretty much put up feet. they seem to pretty much put up with anything on short—haul if it is cheap enough. they have a foot in two camps. they were trying to go for the low—cost market but were also providing holidays and leisure experiences, like thompson. they were. it's thought was up and down put it seemed to be working for them at some point. people are just more happy to put things individually, to book a cheap flights and that own accommodation and car hire, this kind of thing that they were really hit hard. everything that happened with brexit and the fall in the pound and the rise of the euro meant
10:31 am
that they trade mainly in the pound but they were having to pay for fuel and flight routes and everything in euros. it is accommodation at losing routes, being very competitive and crowded marketplace and a really bad exchange rate. it is a real shame. that's bringing tim johnson, director of the caa. good morning. at 4am monarch airlines were put into administration. we had a very short amount of notice that this was a possible outcome and therefore, we have implemented the contingency plans that you would expect a regulator to have. and therefore, for passengers due to fly out of the uk this morning, and in the future, our message for them very much is please don't go to the airport because your flights have been cancelled. for passengers already
10:32 am
overseas, the caa will be implementing and has implemented a flying programme to bring passengers back to the uk on the dates that they were originally anticipating their return flight for. and people like jo their return flight for. and people likejo we have been talking to chose flights were booked for three weeks' time for a family wedding in gibraltar, he is not going, what about him? so, in terms of the passengers travelling out in the future, we really understand that today's news, you know, is very distressing indeed. ithink that today's news, you know, is very distressing indeed. i think in that situation what we do is we would encourage passengers to talk to their insurance companies and credit ca rd their insurance companies and credit card provider to understand whether there is a possibility of a refund in part. but many of the routes that monarch served are served by other airlines so we would encourage your listeners if they are in that
10:33 am
situation to talk to those other airlines and see if they can book alternative routes. we're hearing from a numberof alternative routes. we're hearing from a number of passengers this morning who have tried to rebook their flights on other routes that they have been successful and our experience in the past is that airlines in this situation, other airlines in this situation, other airlines will do what they can to help passengers. yeah, but it will cost the passenger obviously. so those who are abroad, expecting to get a monarch flight back, or who are abroad on a monarch holiday, they are not stranded, are they? they will be able to come back pretty much at the at the same time as they were due to come back and potentially to the same airport? yes, absolutely. really important that customers understand that they are not left stranded. there is a flying programme organised. the details of return flights are set
10:34 am
out on a dedicated website which we have established. no one will be asked to come home early. so passengers can enjoy the holidays that they've got booked out in the resorts they are in at the moment. but if everyone can check this website, the details of their return flights back to the uk will be set out on that website. the nearly 3,000 members of staff, the people who work for monarch, what of them? look, it has been a very difficult day for monarch's employees as well. they are very much in the hands of the administrator now, kpmg. the caa's exclusive focus over the next two we e ks caa's exclusive focus over the next two weeks is bringing home the 110,000 people who are currently in europe and north africa. thank you. tim johnson and toeby and
10:35 am
joe, thank you very much for telling us your story. police in las vegas now say at least twenty people have been killed and over 100 injured by a gunman who opened fire on a music festival. police have confirmed that the suspect — a local man who they have not named — was shot dead. they're searching for a woman who was his travelling companion — a four—foot 11 asian woman named as marilou danley. sheriffjoseph lombardo from the las vegas police department said the gunman opened fire from the thirty—second floor of the mandalay bay hotel and casino. we experienced an active shooter situation approximately 10.08pm tonight. this evening we had calls come in to dispatch of multiple shots being fired from the direction of the mandalay bay towards the
10:36 am
route 91 concert that was taking place on the east side of las vegas boulevard. through investigation and response redetermined there was a shooter on the 31nd floor of the mandalay bay. officers responded to that location and engaged the suspect at that location. he is dead currently. he has been identified. he isa currently. he has been identified. he is a local resident. i will not release his name at this time. but we are release his name at this time. but we a re interested release his name at this time. but we are interested in a cacompanion that's travelling with him and her name is and i will provide you with the names, so please be accurate on this is marilou danley. she is an asian female, approximately four foot 11, a weight of 111lbs. we have not located her at this time and we
10:37 am
are not located her at this time and we a re interested not located her at this time and we are interested in talking to her. as far as are interested in talking to her. as faras number of are interested in talking to her. as far as number of victims, i cannot give you an accurate number at this point. we have well in excess of 100 plus injured and in excess of 20 plus injured and in excess of 20 plus that have died at this point. so we will get those numbers to you accurately as soon as we can. but please bear with us, this is an ongoing investigation, but we are co mforta ble ongoing investigation, but we are comfortable with the primary aggressor in this event has expired or passed away and is no longer a threat. that was the las vegas police sheriff. logan cruz was working at the open—air country music festival along with his girlfriend liberty psesser. they explained what they saw. so, i have been working the last three days. three days at the 91 music festival and they let us off a
10:38 am
little bit early today so we could see the last performer. so i had called my girlfriend to come and meet me there so she could get in too and we could both watch the last performer. so we made our way into the middle of the crowd, pretty close to the stage and so on the third song, wejust close to the stage and so on the third song, we just hear like this noise. it sounded like fireworks. couple of pops going off. everybody just looked around, but theyjust thought it was fireworks and the performer kept going. and then it went off again. like ten seconds later. you see the performersjust run off the stage. the hole stage goes black and then people are saying, "get down. get down." that's when we knew it was obviously like a shooter and we're all on the ground. we can't see anything. it's dark. all we hear is gunshots going off.
10:39 am
it keeps going off. and then it stops for a minute and somebody shouts, "he's reloading, run." there is people lying on the ground. people are bloody everywhere. i saw a girl, her hole face was bloody. her whole chest was bloody. those kids... people were burning their hands on grills because there was barbecues. there is children. there is elderly. it was crazy. so then we make it out and we run towards the tropicana hotel. we are trying to figure out like a way to get out and where to go and we hear somebody yell, "the shooter is in here." everybody starts running out of there. monique and paul dumas were at the concert, at the front of the crowd, when the gunman started firing. they told our colleagues at cbs news, john blackstone,
10:40 am
what they saw and heard. we were at the front having a good time. jason was playing and then all ofa time. jason was playing and then all of a sudden we heard pop, pop, pop, cou ntless of a sudden we heard pop, pop, pop, countless of times and we thought it was firecrackers and it kept going and then he fired a bit and then fired another 15 or 20 rounds and then that's when we realised it was a fully automatic, it sounded like a high powered rifle and it was quiet for a bit and fired another 30 rounds and then quiet and every time he stopped, he was reloading, we got up he stopped, he was reloading, we got up and started making our way towards the fence and we'd hit the ground. i must have heard him do it at least 15 times. what are you thinking when you're lying there and all the shots again and again and ain? all the shots again and again and again? you're thinking it's not really happening. you are thinking it's not really happening. i need to hold on to my husband and my sister
10:41 am
and brother—in—law. we need to get away from this. all of you were there lying down... yes. did you see anybody get hit? we didn't see anybody get hit? we didn't see anybody get hit? we didn't see anybody get hit, but on the right—hand of the stage there were people calling for a medic and for security and somebody had been hit on the right—hand side of the stage. then as we were leaving to the left we we re then as we were leaving to the left we were going to the parking lot and we were going to the parking lot and we could see people lying on the ground with pempl the top of them. so we knew there was half a dozen that we had seen. you got out of the concert venue that we had seen. you got out of the concert venue and that we had seen. you got out of the concert venue and they directed you into the mandalay bay hotel. there we re into the mandalay bay hotel. there were fences getting kicked down because we were trapped in the corner, people were kicking over fences and yeah, we made it back roads and we were directed into the mandalay bay and as we were coming through the mandalay bay, we didn't know at that time, but apparently he was upstairs shooting in the rooms and then we made it out of mandalay
10:42 am
bay and we walked away. you came a long way down the strip here interest this? oh yeah. you say it seemed like perhaps as many as 15 times he reloaded with multiple... easily. with at least 30 rounds he was firing out of each magazine. easily. with at least 30 rounds he was firing out of each magazinem was firing out of each magazinem was about four to five minutes of gunshots that we, because my sister has video also. there was about four or five minutes of us hearing gunshots and crouching behind cars so you would run when the shooting would stop, you would run and then as soon as you heard bullets again you would hit the dirt. everybody was nice and calm. there was a people trying to run. it went down into a goose neck and just started bottling up. everybody just into a goose neck and just started bottling up. everybodyjust kept going and yeah, we made it out and then we ran. once we got on to the streets we started to run. you are saying as people were exiting with
10:43 am
all the bullets going, people were calm? it was remarkable. everybody is trying to get out of there as fa st is trying to get out of there as fast as they can, but stay cal, don't push, don't trample, it was surreal to see that happen and everyone was looking out for everyone was looking out for everyone at the same time trying to escape. clearly, many more people koch been hurt getting out there have? absolutely. when you got out, tell me what relief it was when you got out, you are out here well away? i don't know if it has hit me yet.” didn't find it relief, i was nervous coming from there to here, you didn't know if they found him or got him so we don't know if he is out here coming at us. i was nerve—wracking magging our way to here. do you think it wasjust one shooter giving there was reloading and reloading. it sounded like that. it was constant. it was pop, pop, p0p- it was constant. it was pop, pop, pop. and then load, quiet for 15
10:44 am
seconds, ten seconds and then pop, p0p: p0p: seconds, ten seconds and then pop, p0p, p0p, p0p seconds, ten seconds and then pop, pop, pop, pop again. when the gunman started firing, jason aldean was on stage. he hasjust posted on instagram that he was rushed off stage during the last song of his set. he is safe. he says this, "tonight has been beyond horrific. i still don't know what to say, but i wa nted still don't know what to say, but i wanted to lercht know that me and my crew are safe. my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. it hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who is just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. hashtag heartbroken. hashtag stop the hate." we are going to talk to someone who is on lockdown and kevin who had
10:45 am
friends at the concert. he went to the strip to offer help as soon as he heard about the shooting. thank you for talking to us. how are you? fine. everything is good. what did you experience? there was confusion. there were reports there we re confusion. there were reports there were multiple gunmen. then there was a bit ofa were multiple gunmen. then there was a bit of a panic here at excalibur and people started to run towards the back of the casino, trying to find cover but it turned out to be a false rumour. we just find cover but it turned out to be a false rumour. wejust both find cover but it turned out to be a false rumour. we just both to some people who had been at the concert. i had no idea what happened. people we re i had no idea what happened. people were telling me what happened. there was a shooting and mass panic and people were fleeing. not much else.
10:46 am
a lot of people were in shock. i did not understand at first. where are you now? i am on the third floor of the excalibur. guests were herded to the excalibur. guests were herded to the third—floor conference rooms. the swat teams were here earlier. armed men swat teams. i think they are probably checking to see if there are any more potential threats. we are stuck on the third—floor until the threats. we are stuck on the third —floor until the all clear is given. i'm guessing it is a little calmer now, is that right? yes. a little bit. just people lying on the floor. i have sent one of your
10:47 am
reporters a picture of the scene. there are a lot of people on the floor, laying about against the wall. waiting for the word to leave. thank you very much. thank you for talking to us. thank you. didier peres who is on lockdown at the excalibur hotel. kevin, where you?” am back in my house. i live near downtown and old fremont street. when you heard about the shooting committee went straight down there, did you? yes. i actually had friends in town, four of them. earlier in the day they had invited me to go to the day they had invited me to go to the festival. i had actually got another event elsewhere. when i came back to my house, they had textured me that there was a shooting happening. at first i had to make
10:48 am
sure they were notjoking. i went to twitter and i saw things were happening. i told them to get somewhere safe and i was on my way. ijumped in my car and started to head for the area. what did you find when you arrived? the metro police department was really quick to respond. i could tell the freeways or the highways were all shut down. any road leading towards the main pa rt any road leading towards the main part of the strip all shut down. once i realised i couldn't get to my friends right away, and she was coming down the road towards the festival and saw people, groups of people, running, and just getting away from the area. and then i saw ca rava ns away from the area. and then i saw caravans and ambulances, just one
10:49 am
after another, nonstop, just coming away from the festival. what do you think about what has happened in your city? you know, over the past few years, with anything that has happened, threats of things happening here. you never want it to happen. then something like this does and it is just... happen. then something like this does and it isjust... you are vulnerable, as i am sure people in other cities have experienced. it is kind of mind—boggling that someone, groups of people or whoever, with do that to people. they are just going to listen to music and enjoy themselves. and we have heard that all sorts of people were at the festival. there were kids there and the elderly. it was a real mixed group of thousands of people, just
10:50 am
loving music, as you say. it was. it was. it was strange. when i realised i couldn't get my friends immediately, and i saw people, i started rolling down my window and yelling out to anybody who needed a ride. i was able to take quite a few people on a couple of trips, just to get away from the area to ever they needed to go. at that point ijust, you know, you don't think about, you know, race or gender or anything at that point. we just care that other people get say. yes. you are able to help people in get them out of the area. that was their instinct. they just needed to get away as soon as possible. they did. most of the people booked into the hotel is right next to the festival. i think they knew at that moment they were not going to be a will to go back. i don't know if they wanted to go
10:51 am
back. until i could pick up my friends, i was just trying to get as many people as possible away from the area. far enough away to be safe. i don't know if you heard that the gunman was actually shooting from the mandalay bay hotel and casino from the 32nd floor, according to the police.” casino from the 32nd floor, according to the police. i did hear that, yes. luckily, by the time i got down there, i wasn't not close to the strip. i wasn't close enough to the strip. i wasn't close enough to the strip. i wasn't close enough to the hotel. it was on the opposite side, more close to the east side of las vegas. i was miles, like probably two miles away from the festival and people were running away. as far away as possible. i was not that close to the festival hall.
10:52 am
the gunman would have been able to check into that hotel with his weapon because you can do that. yes, ididn't weapon because you can do that. yes, i didn't realise. most of the security of the hotels around here i have seen has been more strict in the past year and a half to two yea rs the past year and a half to two years for hear that is actually, via c, frightening. i was not aware of that, to be honest with you. strict, in what way? you can carry a gun around with you. some hotels you pull in and you have security up front. they stop you and do random ca rd front. they stop you and do random card checks and stuff like that. i don't know too much about the gun laws. i personally don't carry any but i know several that do. it is
10:53 am
obviously a frightening thought. the fa ct obviously a frightening thought. the fact he was there is even worse. thank you for talking to us. we appreciate it. thank you very much. 0f appreciate it. thank you very much. of course. kevin, who went to help. we have spoken this morning to nathan, a british analyst who is on holiday with his family, staying opposite the mandalay bay hotel. he witnessed victims fleeing the shooting. we are just going out off the exit tours when maybe ten to 15 people ran straight past us. we did not think too much of it. a few seconds later it was hundreds, just running in. we didn't really fully understand or knew exactly what was going on at the time. we turned around and went straight back into the casino. hundreds of people running and crying and screaming, dropping bags, dropping shoes, dropping bags, dropping shoes, dropping everything they could. that

shot twice in the chest. a man was shot twice in the chest. a man was shot twice in the arm and a shoulder area. people shot in different areas. a man was shot in the face. for us, we made four trips to sunrise medical stop nine to 11 people to the hospital who actually had gunshots to various areas of their bodies. more eyewitness accounts. we have heard from a number of people live from vegas, most of whom are holed up in hotel rooms along the strip at vegas, talking to us on the phones via skype were telling us about the panic and confusion as they realised what they thought at first were fireworks were actually gunshots. that is when people first of all crouched down until one or two people said he is reload in. that is when people started to run for their lives effectively. the strip is in lockdown. all the hotels. you cannot get in or out. most people, it would
